About Us

Blessings in a Bag is a non-profit project that seeks to partner with existing communities, orphanages, schools, homes as well as initiatives to provide for the needs of underprivileged, abused and medically-ill children across Asia. We seek to work alongside individuals and community members who are already involved in the lives of these children as well as encouraging society, especially youths, to know that they can make a difference, one child at a time.

We seek to exist only in Singapore and to serve as the middle-man.  We opt to support programmes and initiatives being run by organisations established in their respective countries and already impacting many children and communities.

We support ourselves through the work of our volunteer, through the sales of our WorldChangeAgent t-shirts (pictured above) and other ‘Blessings in a Bag Merch’ and through the generous giving of friends and family.

‘Blessings in a Bag’ carries out a number of activities and programs.  Find out here.

What sets ‘Blessings in a Bag’ (BIAB) apart from all other non-profits?

1.  We’re small. We know we can’t change the entire world on our own.  But we believe in doing small things with a lot of focus and a BIG heart.  We like to see ourselves as middle-men; connecting the people who can help with the people who need it most.

“We can not do great things. We can only do little things with great love.” – Mother Teresa

2.  We like to have fun. We don’t believe in simply giving your money to a cause for the sake of ‘giving to charity.  While that’s not a bad thing, we believe that giving back and making a difference can be a fun and fulfilling process.  We try our best to make our activities/programs fun and enjoyable (or at least give you the opportunity to create the fun on your own!).

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” -Walt Disney

3.  We’re ‘dream-doers’. A lot of what we do are a mix of dreams mish-mashed into one.  We encourage the BIAB family (volunteers and team members) to begin dreaming and eventually doing!  We believe that anything is possible – it just requires a dream or idea to begin with and a whole lot of hard work!

“God gives us dreams a size too big so that we can grow in them. ” – Unknown

4.  We’re ‘World Change Agents’. We see the power in uniting together to make a difference in the lives of many across Asia.  Come join the BIAB family today!

5.  We believe in relationships. We don’t see a point in doing what we do if it isn’t to partner with other organisations, companies and the communities we work with.  We choose our beneficiaries carefully and work toward building strong relationships.

“Light is the task where many share the toil” – Homer

6.  We’re all about sustainability.
While it may not look like it right now, that’s where we’re headed.  We don’t believe in simply providing handouts to communities because it just fuels the poverty cycle further.  We want to work alongside communities and help them help themselves.

“We thrive and survive on planet earth as a single human family. And one of our main responsibilities is to leave to successor generations a sustainable future.” – General Kofi A. Annan

7.  We inspire. (We hope!) We hope that the work we do speaks for itself and that it may inspire the next generation (or even current ones!) to be the generation of ‘World Change Agents’.  We want the youth in Singapore (and hopefully the World) to think up solutions on their own and travel first hand to see the difference they can make.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss

8.  We believe in trying and failing. We believe that nothing is perfect and we are open to trying new things, ideas and ways of doing things.  That being said, we understand there will be times that we may fail.  But we believe that is through our failures that we can creatively think of solutions and ultimately, try again!

“A setback is a set up for a comeback” – Emily Teng, Founder.

9.  We’re all about Asia.  That’s where ‘home’ is to us and that’s where we feel called towards.

10.  It’s about them. We don’t do what we do to get recognition.  The BIAB family members are all here for one purpose and that is to help wherever we can.  While our main focus is on children, we believe that if we are able to help others along the way, we will.

Above all else:  “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Founder and Director of Blessings in a Bag, Emily Teng, launched the project in 2007 after a life-long desire to take action and make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. She has worked for local media company, Mediacorp, as a Producer/Presenter (Radio DJ) at 987fm for 5 years and currently works at SAFRA RADIO as a Producer/Presenter (Radio DJ) at Power98 FM.

Emily counts Singapore as her home even though the first 8 years of her childhood were spent in Jakarta, Indonesia.  While there, she saw for herself the large disparity between those who ‘have’ and those who ‘have-not’.  The later parts of her life were spent in Melbourne, Australia and in Singapore.  It was in Australia that she discovered her passion for making a difference to the community when she took part in volunteer programs set up by her school, Methodist Ladies’ College.

What started out as a small project run out of her own wardrobe, quickly turned into a motivation for action.  And though the organisation is considered ‘young’, Emily and the BIAB team strongly believe that they are making a big difference in many lives across Asia.
